Day 39: The Arizona Ironman

Day 39: The Arizona Ironman

Today on our off day, while Calli is probably eating a delicious thanksgiving dinner, I would like to describe my experience during last weekend at Ironman Arizona 2011. Maybe some of you already have seen the pictures on our Facebook account (Let’s TRI), and you noticed how I was trying to cover every possible spot during the event. As I’m writing, the videos that I promised a few days ago are uploading on our youtube channel and hopefully by tomorrow you will have access to all of them.

But let me tell you the story. Waking up at 5:30 in the morning on a Sunday is not what I would usually do, but this was different… I wasn’t even planning on being in Arizona for the Ironman, it just happened! I took the first bus to be able to see close to 2600 people in the water and maybe double than that on top of the two bridges of N Mill Avenue. The water was at 18°C (64°F), so it was not THAT bad for the cold morning that we were in. And looking at all that people ready to start with a 2.4 mile swim was very inspiring! Maybe they were not thinking about the 180 km of biking or the marathon that was waiting for them afterwards… Once they started there was no turning back! You better finish! Even if you have to walk at the end… It doesn’t matter!

Approximately 50 minutes after the pro athletes started, they were already getting out of the water! For a person like me that is still struggling with the swimming, it was even more inspiring and kind of scary at the same time! I need to be there at some point! I took a video of the first 8 guys getting out and then I ran to the transition zone and waited for them to take off on their bikes, which I also recorded.

Being in the transition zone is simply amazing! You see young people (18 years old girl the youngest) and not so young people too (69 years old the eldest gentleman). You see very fit people, but also people with a few extra pounds. And they all have one thing in common: They want to finish and they look so excited that I cannot explain! I saw ALL of them! 2600 persons ready to experience the biking route!

At this point of the morning, I went to have breakfast and then check out of the hotel because I was returning to Costa Rica that same night. But short after lunch and with the help of a great friend I found in there, I went back to the finish line to wait for the first one to come. I was honestly waiting that it was Eneko Llanos. He is a great person, a humble guy, very friendly and of course as people say, behind every great man there’s always great woman too! And this was not the exception. Eneko’s wife looked as humble and friendly as him and they seem to be very in love which even in that way was inspiring for me (I love you Calli!). I had the chance to talk to him a couple of days before the race and his wife took a couple of pictures of us. One of them is our picture for today. But anyways, as I was approaching the finish line I heard the people cheering loud! The champion was coming! Since I was still far from the finish line I had to run over there while preparing my phone to take a video of the winner!

I got to see Eneko running and I took a very short video of his entrance, I was almost running with him since I was far! But it was the perfect timing! I had two pictures with the new Arizona Ironman Champion and the first one to go below 8 hrs on this IM. It was amazing looking at him still being able to walk just fine, because others after him, crumbled at the finish line and they hardly walk fine after that. Eneko deserved to win that afternoon!

Being a little bit stubborn I had to have another picture! So I went as close as I could and he finally approached to talk with some friends and I asked him for the pic! The one that Calli posted on Sunday!

Unfortunately I had to go soon to the airport so I left the Tempe Beach Park and I was not able to see Leanda Cave finishing with her extraordinary 8:49:00. But it was good enough… for now!

On my way to the airport around 7:30 pm I saw a LOT of people still running, others walking, trying to finish their marathon… As I said at the beginning: You better finish! Not to prove anyone that you can do it but to prove YOURSELF that you can do it! The pain will last a couple of days, but knowing that you crossed the finish line, will last forever! You are now an IRONMAN FINISHER!

Being this my first Ironman experience I just can wait to be able to be there on any other city! Hopefully there will come the day when I will be able to participate in one and be a proud finisher too! Let’s hope for the best!

Day 35: Ironman Arizona

Day 35: Ironman Arizona

Calli- Today I had a very special party to attend. My mom and sister threw a bridal shower for me becasue Jose and I are going to be married next year. This is my excuse for missing training today. Hehe…I know all my blogs about excuses and it just falls through in the end. I will be back onboard tomorrow. Tonight Jose is flying back home and he had a great week which I am sure he will tell you all about soon! I will say this much though; he had the opportunity to meet the Ironman Arizona champ this weekend, and have a nice chat with him. I know this was so inspiring for him, and I am a little bit envious that I did not get to share in that excitement! ;) Jose, have a safe flight home, and I will see you in another week or so. Te amo xoxoxo

 Have a good night everyone!

Day 34: Brisk Evening

Day 34: Brisk Evening

Calli: Today I had a nice buddy swim with my mom. My set was as follows: 250 Streamline Flutter Kick (on back), 350 Freestyle Pull, 12 25′s Freestyle (first 6 on 45 sec, second 6 on 35sec; I definitely can push myself harder next time on these because I had too much down time and it was supposed to be Zone 3), 350 Freestyle Pull, and 250 Streamline Kick (on back). It goes fairly quick when I follow a pattern or a set. Going into the kicks today my ankle and knee were feeling a little bit tweeked, but the water always works it out. This low contact sport is what gave me my weak joints in the first place, but it sure is good for recovery too.

Jose- Unfortunately the race for this morning was cancelled. It was like it never existed. They only kept a 1mi race for kids. Since I planned to run today I did it anyways. I made a 5.5 km run just for fun. It took me 26:26 minutes and I checked when I was at the 5km mark and I had 24:08 minutes. That’s actually good! I ran at a pace a little bit higher that 5 min/km. I felt good and even though my leg was still tense, it was not a problem during the route. I still need to reduce 4+ minutes, but I’m on the right track! Tomorrow is IRONMAN day! I’m very excited about the experience. I took some pictures and I will take more and I’ll make sure to share those on the Facebook account! Stay tuned: it will be good stuff! Finally I bought a few things for racing. Pictures will also come next week. Enjoy your weekend!!

Day 33: Jello…fish!

Day 33: Jello…fish!

Calli- Today I had another busy day of work, and right after teaching swim lessons I ran to the treadmill. It is getting fairly easy to pass the time away, but I am concentrating very hard on the position of my legs and feet. I felt my right knee starting to tweak a little so I started lifting my knees more, which helped tremendously. I also thought back to trying to teach a youngster in the pool to relax his ankles more when he swam. They were so tense that his toes looked like they were making a fist! I ran out of metaphors to explain to him how to make his feet relax and be floppy. I asked my brother later (also my boss) what he would have said to the kid. “Make it like jello…” he said. Of course! Jello. I know this is not the best description for an adult vocabulary, but the point is that during a physical activity, there needs to be a moment when your limbs are relaxed (like jello) so that you are not straining anything important in the long run. Have fun out there!

Jose- Today I think my tendon is better. I cannot say it’s a 100% though. I guess walking around the ASU campus all this week was more than I normally walk around home in Costa Rica. I know that because my legs are very tense and tight. I have to admit that I’m afraid about tomorrow because I still feel the tension and a little bit of pain. Hopefully it will work out. Today was supposed to be running day but since I’m running tomorrow then I switched the swimming for today. I worked on a few exercises that Calli recommended me and I felt very good about them. I got to practice a lot of breathing and by the end I managed to swim 100 meters basically non stop to finish strong. Tomorrow I’ll try to race the small sibling of the big IRONMAN TEMPE! wish me luck!

Day 30: The Sun Devils

Day 30: The Sun Devils

Calli- I woke up around 7 to start my indoor ride. Those awful bikes aren’t so bad anymore. I got used to them too. All my soreness is gone for now, but it was a bit difficult to keep my pace up from other days. I was tired today, but I pushed it knowing that I could. I felt really good knowing that I put a great effort in and I started my day at work feeling refreshed and healthy. I don’t think I will ever get addicted to exercising, just to the feeling it gives me after I’m done. Push it out there and have a good evening!

Jose- This week I’ve been and I will be training with the devils. On top of their great campus, the Sun Devils of ASU have a great spirit! You can see the gym full until 10-11pm when they close. Today I did 60 min on the bike and according to the software I did 22.7 miles. Almost double than I need to do for race day. I was very tired but again I decided to jump to the pool at least for a while. I did 300 meters in about 12 minutes. I’m still slow but a month ago that wasn’t even among my possibilities so I feel great about it. Tomorrow will be just swimming day and I’m planning on lowering the volume of training a bit because I might run 5k on Saturday morning as part of the activities for IRONMAN Arizona!! I look forward to see this amazing race! In the mean time I’ll continue training while fearing the fork…
