Day 136- Splashing around

Day 136- Splashing around

Calli: What a long day…Luckily, I got to start it off with a nice swim. I was telling Jose earlier that it’s a funny feeling at the beginning of every work out. As every muscle becomes active you feel tired and sore right away. Then by the end of the session, you feel like you could just keep on going. I think this has something to do with the fact that I am not warming up enough. A good way to maybe warm up for swimming is to not only stretch your arms, but also to do some strength exercises.Simple ones, such as push ups. ALright everybody…happy fun time, and don’t forget to warm up.

Jose: I’m very excited about the swim outcome from today. The distance I have to swim for this first TRI is short and that’s why one of the main things to focus on is the speed. The last time that I swam the whole 750 meters I finished in around 24 minutes. Of course I was starting and actually it was a great accomplishment since two months before I was still learning how to properly breath. This time I managed to do 200 meters in a little bit over 4 minutes. Of course that’s not for a world record, but it is MY personal record. If I manage to keep the same pace for the 750 meters I’ll be done in less than 15 minutes. That would be a great time for me to reach. I’ll just keep the hard work for the remaining 190 days.

If you’re trying to achieve, there will be
roadblocks. I’ve had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don’t
have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up.
Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” – Michael Jordan

Day 135- Some night pavements

Day 135- Some night pavements

Calli: Yes, that’s right. We caught the night road tonight! It was a refreshing run actually. After a hard days work, there is honestly nothing else that can boost your morale more than running. After work today I felt tired, and a little bit down trodden. Teaching is hard, and I am new at it. I want to be inspiring, clear, and motivating as a teacher, but this comes with a lot of experience. In some cases it comes naturally, but that is not me. So, after a hard day of work, I really wanted to go for this run. I wanted to clear my head, and I wanted to feel capable and strong. Running can rebuild your character and shape your perspective on yourself. I didn’t feel this way about running last year at all. This is a new leaf for me…happy fun time everyone!

Jose: Running at night can be very refreshing. Maybe even more than the mornings when the sun is coming out. However, as usual, after a long day at work it can also be the thing that you are wishing the least to do. We went out at 8:30 pm. Luckily the place where we live has internal roads we can use for running. After 15 minutes of the start I was already in the mood to continue all the necessary time. But that initial decision of jumping out to the pavement can be a difficult one to make. My average heart rate: 155bpm, my exact pace is unknown but by the distance covered and time used, I would say it was around 5min/km, maybe (and hopefully) less. Now tired as nobody can imagine… I’m ready to go to bed! Good night everyone!

Day 134- Against the wind

Day 134- Against the wind

Calli- As I was swimming today a huge gust of wind came and threw everything in to the pool. It was fairly entertaining, until I realized my clothes, towel, and backpack (with phone) was among them. Luckily, someone grabbed them out immediately. However, I remember the way it felt to have this wind go over me. First I felt it from the back pushing me forward, and then I felt it from the front causing resistance, but I didn’t stop. I didn’t want to lose focus. This reminded me of what it’s like everyday to get up in the morning. There are days when it is easy and you are motivated by your own desire to move forward, and there are other days when something is pushing you back and throwing twigs and sand in your path. Just keep your head down…and go!

Jose-  Today I had to go at night to the pool since the morning was a little bit extra dark and cold and the bed was very warm. That’s what happens sometimes. I sometimes wish that I could wake up early enough every single day to finish my workout and spend the rest of the day more motivated and energized. That’s not always the case, especially when you have work and/or your girlfriend has work too. Then you need to make the most of your day and look for the extra time you have to do your training session. That was the case today and I ended up going for a short (but very energizing) swim of around 600 meters. Some pull, some kick and a lot of freestyle was the formula today. My kick is FINALLY getting better…

Day 133- Solid as a brick!

Day 133- Solid as a brick!

Calli: It was a solid day. Sleeping in is the best medicine for recovery! I didn’t even realize I slept in so late, but it helped me with the brick today. I felt ready and excited to kick this bike’s butt. I really liked practicing with the shoes, and I was able to get in and out of the pedals faster this time. I also enjoyed the 20 min run afterwards. I have a typical soreness after a run like this. My gluts and my quads always feel sore for the week. We have to reschedule the workouts due to my new job. So we will see what comes of it. Happy fun time everyone!

Jose: I haven’t enjoyed a brick day in a long time as much as I enjoyed the one we did today. I pushed it on the bike with 6 different intervals of 5 minutes at two high strength paces and 5 minutes recover. After a good hour we jumped to the treadmills for 20 minutes and even though I still cannot do the 5km below 20 minutes I know I’m close and it makes me very excited. Right now I’m tired and ready to go to bed, especially since an early swim workout is waiting for us tomorrow early morning.

Aside

Day 132- No more Saturday sessions!

Today as we thought it would be we had a hard time trying to schedule our bike training session. Saturdays are turning into our most difficult day to handle because Calli works until 2pm and then we also have house duties and we are actually working hard on planning our wedding for next June. As a result we decided to not schedule any workout sessions for Saturdays. At least for a while.

In honor of our missed bike session I want to share an article on How to Improve Your Breathing on the Bike, brought to you by the always amazing Active.com. For me it’s just amazing how after months of making research I can still read new stuff every single day. This TRI thing is more complex than I would have ever imagined. But every single chance of learning something new is a chance to fill an ignorance void so I’m happy with it! Enjoy this lecture
