Day 10: Moving Forward

Calli- A great strategy to brave the cold water for me is to just jump in and start with a 200 mtr kick. Then I can start the workout. Another thing I noticed about myself is that if I stop to rest, I get out and call it a day. I did manage to time a 500 mtr swim at 9′ 22″…I will have to change my immediate goal to 9 minutes. Surprisingly, the water was not so bad tonight. Have fun out there everyone!

Jose- After experiencing the first traces of a good swimming on last saturday’s training, I thought everything was going to be easier today. I’m glad I didn’t put all my hope on that! Swimming continues to be a huge challenge for me. On the good side Calli helped me with my arm form and she said I did good, the breathing though is still the part that makes me loose concentration and form. I did more than 1 lap without stoping tonight so I’m definitely improving, but I still have a long way to go…

Day 9: Focus on Form

Calli- Biking was easy today, and I was focusing on form more than anything else. The way my foot has to  pull and push at an even rotation. Also, it is good form to keep the  upper body relatively still and only work the legs. I am not sure if I am doing it correctly when I rise in the bike because I find myself either jutting my hips out behind me or tucking them in under me. There are tons of articles on the matter of form. Here is one I found helpful.  Until tomorrow…have a god one!

Jose- There are too many things to focus on biking! Perfect leg rotation, pulling and pushing, hips shoulders and torso on a still position, head up facing forward, in line arms… Once you start getting one right the others start getting worse! It’s a process! At least I feel like my resistance is improving for the bike too. Having still more than a year to go, I can picture my biking technique getting better and better with time.

Day 8: Those early mornings…

Calli- The run/speed walk was good today. I made about a tenth progress in speed versus heart rate. So I can conclude that progress will be made, even if it’s slow. I need to stick with it mentally because in the second week I am already trying to convince myself that sleeping in would be a better choice. Here comes the real mental work; when all the excitement of the start wears off I am left with only my will to go on. The best part of the day was the big breakfast that followed an early morning work out.

Jose- Running again at zone 2 can be still slow, but feeling how my heart is getting use to it and actually starts to beat less is certainly great! Another good thing about running at a lower pace is the opportunity of getting to know your body better and how it reacts at different situations. One of the most important things for me is changing my running strike from falling on the heels to falling on the ball of the feet. I have been doing it now for a few months and these are the kind of things that running at a lower pace let me control and focus on. Waking up at 5:15 is still not my thing, but for sure I’ll get use to it…

Day 7: Brick Day

Calli- A brick day is when two of the sports are worked, one right after the other. Today it was biking and running. My heart rate was steady between Zone 2 and Zone 3. This helped me last the whole one and a half hours with a steady pace with out  losing all of my energy. It felt good, and the big lunch after words was a perfect follow-up. Thanks to my great friends who care. It is nice to have all the support.

Jose- Biking is a big challenge for Calli and me because neither of us have been doing it to compete before. For this reason, being on the bike for almost an hour and a half wasn’t what either of us would call easy. Anyways we made it! Right after that we went straight to the treadmill and ran for another 10 minutes at zone 3… Starting was complicated! I felt like my legs were not responding very well during the first 2-3 minutes after all that biking, but we both finished strong and enthusiastic! One week over… 54 to go!

Day 6: Keep on Swimming~~~

Calli-  Before swimming we each ate a granola bar and I ate half a banana for a little bit of energy. This really helps me mentally and physically get ready for the workout. Today I finished with a 500 swim, which was not the whole work out nor was it a challenge for me. I just get to a certain point when the water is freezing my ear drums and I have to thaw out. Pretty soon I will gain the stamina to stand the cold longer. But today is a day for Jose! He had a major accomplishment in his swimming techinique and ability! I am so proud of him for making it….good job mi amor!

Jose- I’m getting there… Today after loads of videos about how to properly swim and breathe, I managed to do it myself. I went twenty meters all the way doing the most proper swimming technique that I have accomplished so far! I know that 20 meters is  nothing compared to the 750 mts that I will have to swim next year, but I find it pretty awesome considering that two months ago I could only swim with my face out! We are also swimming only twice a week since then. I’m very excited about it and I’m sure I’ll reach my immediate goal maybe sooner than I thought…
